Malabar Muslim Folk Art (Mappila)

📍 Malabar region (Malappuram, Kozhikode, Kannur)
Traditional Mappila Muslim wedding dance performed mainly by women. The bride sits in the centre while 10–15 performers sing Mappila songs, clap rhythmically and dance around her with simple graceful steps. Two main styles exist: Oppana Chayal (swaying without clapping) and Oppana Murukkam (faster with clapping). Often accompanied by harmonium, tabla, ganjira and elathalam.

Thiruvathirakali (Kaikottikali)

Traditional women’s group dance performed around a nilavilakku (oil lamp). Dancers move in a circle with graceful lasya movements, rhythmic hand-clapping and subtle footwork while singing Thiruvathira songs in praise of Shiva and Parvati. Originally a ritual for marital bliss observed on Thiruvathira day (Dhanu month) and now popular during Onam and cultural programmes.
